Mike McGhee

Associate Director, Accounting & Finance

Who is Mike McGhee?

I grew up in a small village in Donegal, Ireland and after finishing university, I wanted to travel to experience new cultures, meet different people, and step out of my comfort zone. Over a decade ago, I found myself in Melbourne and was instantly drawn to its vibrant culture. It didn't take long for me to decide that this was where I wanted to make my home.

For the past 8 years, I've been immersed in the fast-paced world of accounting and finance recruitment here in Melbourne. It's been an incredible journey, honing my skills and building a strong network within the industry. Life took an exciting turn recently with the arrival of my daughter, Hazel. Being a first-time dad has been the most amazing experience to date. In Melbourne’s summer you can find me training for triathlons. I love the physical and mental challenges of swimming, cycling, and running, and I'm always pushing myself to new limits. In Winter, I’ll be sat by an open fire with a glass of red or a good Irish whiskey.

What led you to work in recruitment?

I fell into the world of recruitment not entirely knowing what it was to begin with. I started my sales journey when I arrived in Melbourne 10 years ago, began to really enjoy it, then I learnt a lot about my strengths when I became a recruiter. I thrive on building meaningful relationships and excel in the dynamic world of sales, where every connection is an opportunity to create a perfect match between candidates and companies. Whether it's through networking events, interviews, or consultations, I find immense satisfaction in understanding people's aspirations and guiding them towards fulfilling careers.

What do I love most about what I do?

Building lasting relationships and meeting lots of new candidates and clients. I love hearing about other people’s success and their career journey to date. I also love to inspire my colleagues, recruitment can be a tough industry to be in, we need to always think about our long-term goal rather than focusing on some of the challenges that

might occur on a weekly basis.

What are you passionate about, personally?

My daughter and family, being a first-time dad and not having any family help has made re realise the importance of being present outside of the office. I really enjoy challenging myself when it comes to physical activity. I.E Cycling, Swimming & Running.

Tell us 3 words others have used to describe you?

2.Empathic

My Dad, he was ex-military and how he went about things. Pro-athletes who race in Ironman. The persistence, determination and grit they showcase is fantastic, this can always be implemented in all aspects of your life personally and professionally.

What is something many people don't know about you?

Two mates and I cycled to Adelaide from Melbourne over 6 days, 930km during Covid lockdowns. We had no support, just a backpack with one change of clothes that we had to wash every night at each air B&B.

What is your superpower and why?

Being able to see what the future holds so we can prepare ourselves on what is to come.

At the end of 2025, what would you like to have learned?
  • Learned the market has changed in our favour and add headcount in Senior Finance and advance my career at Morgan.
