Tired Doctor? 5 Reasons Working Locum Might Be the Answer for You
Default Author • Aug 30, 2017

Whether it be in Private Practice or a Hospital Environment, I've been in the Healthcare and Medical Industry for the past 14 years.  During that time, I've seen Doctors in tears, staring off into space with tiredness or even a look of disbelief from the sheer challenge of it all.

Doctors are human beings just like the rest of us.  Sure, they work hard but they have feelings too; they aren't immune to having rough days.  They deal with some really tough people on a day to day basis, they have to deliver bad news sometimes, news that is quite confronting and they attend challenging emergency situations that those of us who aren't doctors, will never fully grasp.

What I am trying to get at is, with all the challenges its common for Doctors to go through stages of doubt, concern or frustration questioning if it's all worth it.   What you might need is a little shake up to break the routine or perhaps it's time to test the waters and try something slightly different?  Why not try Locum work?

Here are a few reasons doing Locum Placements are beneficial:

Freedom:

You can choose where and when you work, and can even go on a working holiday where you can take your family. Maybe you've been working full time since leaving University and it's starting to feel like Groundhog Day. 90% of Locum vacancies offer accommodation so why not pick a destination and pick up some Locum work so you can have the freedom to work and holiday. And this creates a
better work-life balance and more time with your family. It's a win-win situation.

Show me the money:

Locum placements pay well and offer a variety of shifts and days. The variety is offered Australia wide from Metro to Rural and Remote locations.

Pay it forward:

Do a good deed for people from all different backgrounds. Rural and Remote facilities are a perfect example of needing more doctors wanting to do Locum work. It is sometimes challenging and exciting but it's always a great learning experience that benefits others.

Improve your skills:

Exposure to other medical facilities in areas you thought you would or could never work are always exciting ways to improve your skills as you are exposed to situations you could never have imagined.

Prevents burnout:

If you've been working full time since leaving University, you might be thinking “ENOUGH”. You love what you do but you are tired in ways that you never imagined; mentally, physically and emotionally. Doing Locum placements gives you the chance to still work hard, but on your terms.  You will still earn good $$ but at the same time you get to choose where you work, how long for and if you want you can take your family.
