Top 5 Ways Women Can Feel Empowered at Work

International Women's Day (IWD) is March 8th, and it is the perfect opportunity for gender diversity to be celebrated on a global scale, especially within the workplace. IWD helps shed light on important issues women face within the job force and opens up some much-needed conversations. It is vital to include not only women in these conversations, but men as well to change the workforce for the better.

is celebrating this upcoming holiday and providing our readers with some tips on how to feel empowered at work along with some suggestions for employers on how they can empower their female employees on the job.


1. Start a club or organisation


Clubs and not-for-profit organisations are an essential part of building a great work-life culture. They are the perfect way to get co-workers interacting and connecting outside of the office and most importantly within the community. These work groups can be to get like-minded individuals together, or for fundraising for causes that align with your company's goals.


There is much fun to be had brainstorming
fun fundraising ideas or starting a fitness club with your colleagues. If you realise there is a need for a specific club, pitch the idea to your manager and spearhead the committee. This will not only shed a bright light on yourself, but will also benefit the company and its employees in the long run - win/win!


2. Ask for a raise


Asking for an increase in pay can be an intimidating thing to consider. However, there are several ways to get the answer you are looking for and an appropriate way to go about asking. Before asking for a raise, it is safe to assume that you have re-evaluated the work that you have completed while in your current role and have determined it to be more than satisfactory, and you have remained in your position for a decent amount of time. Approach your manager with confidence and the new salary you are seeking.


If you have excelled in your current role, but have not had a long tenure, there is no harm in asking for more responsibilities. More responsibilities will show that you are willing to go above and beyond your role and provide value to the company, and will eventually lead towards a raise or some sort of promotion.

 

3. Apply for an internal position


Movement within your company shows that there are great opportunities for growth. Keep an eye out for any new opportunities that may arise within your department or in a separate role you wish to fulfil or discover. This may be where a pay increase can occur - without even asking!


4. Ask for public speaking opportunities


If your company frequents conferences, trade shows or networking events, ask if you can take part and take on a leadership role. Public speaking opportunities are excellent for showing your skills and putting your name out there.

 

5. Focus on building relationships

 

Building relationships while at work is one of the most valuable and empowering things you can achieve outside of your day-to-day duties. Work relationships often lead to friendships, leadership opportunities and so much more. If you are confident within your role, ask to take a new hire under your wing and mentor them. Get outside of the office and ask your co-workers for coffee or to join you as a workout buddy. Looking to advance within the company? Ask to shadow the person in the position you wish to obtain in the future. Good luck!
