Video introductions: standing out from the crowd

How much effort are you willing to invest in your career?

The market is more competitive than ever, and jobseekers have no choice but to find new ways to make their applications stand out from the rest. OR risk missing out on their dream job altogether.

At Morgan we harness the power of technology to give you a seamless, first-class job application experience.

Hence why I encourage every candidate I work with to film a short video introduction, to help them race through the shortlist stage.

You've worked so hard to get this far! Now's the time to really make an impact and hammer home that job opportunity.

Let's take a closer look at why they are so effective in the early stages of the process…

1. Grabs attention

A video intro is unique. When a hiring manager sees a video accompanying a résumé, they'll be curious and want to take a look. Mainly because it requires much less effort to watch a video as it does to actively read a résumé.  As you know, getting their attention is the first step!

If you're applying for a creative position such as in marketing, why not go one step further and do some clever editing to showcase your creativity? Employers will immediately appreciate what you can offer to the company.

 2. Showcases your personality

A video introduction allows you to demonstrate who you are in a more intimate and personal way. You can engage with the hiring manager in ways that you can't do with a traditional résumé simply by how you articulate yourself, your smile, facial expressions, and energy.

Your video puts a face to the name and list of achievements on your CV. They'll get a feel for you as a person and can instantly see if you would be a culture fit.

Remember, it's not just what you say, it's how you say it. Use your voice, pitch, tone, and body language to convey your enthusiasm – non-verbal cues make up 93% of all communication! Give them a reason to meet you.

3. Demonstrates tech skills

Although creating a video intro is relatively easy (especially with the guidance of your dedicated consultant), you'll come across as highly tech-savvy to potential employers. It demonstrates a willingness to take risks, learn quickly and adapt to new technology trends – before they've even met you! Now that is how you make an impact.

 4. Gives you more control

I often come across candidates who feel they have an unfair disadvantage where their CV doesn't accurately represent the value they can add. Maybe they've moved companies a few times in recent years, but have totally legitimate reasons for this. In which case, they'd rather meet with the employer and get a chance to explain.

But how do you secure that interview in the first place? Your best bet is to send a video intro! The greatest thing is that you can control exactly how you appear: how you're dressed, what you say and your overall demeanour. Plus, you have the chance to do a few takes and make sure you get it right!

5. Proves your sales ability

We encourage video intros to be around 30-40 seconds, very similar to an elevator pitch. Any longer and you could end up losing your viewer – our attention spans are getting shorter with an increasing digitized lifestyle. This means you have a set time limit to sell yourself and your skills in a compelling way.

How you present yourself in this video reflects how you'll represent a business to their customers, clients and colleagues.

For example, as a receptionist you'll be representing the business front of house so will need to look very presentable and have a warm welcome.

The bottom line is that video intros give candidates the competitive 'edge', enabling them to tell their stories and be remembered in a way that a CV simply can't. They have been so effective that its quickly becoming common practice in the recruitment industry.

When you meet with me to discuss your career aspirations, I'll walk you through exactly how to nail your video intro - it's quick, simple, and easy. Give me a call on 03 8606 0380 to get started.
