What Recruiters Look for in a CV

So, you've found a job description that looks perfect for you. But how do you make sure your job application stands out from the crowd? We're here to give you the inside scoop on what recruiters are looking for when they receive a resumé…

Experience that fits

When a recruiter reads a cover letter and opens a CV, they want to immediately see that your experience is aligned with the role they're filling. Carefully read the job description and ensure both your cover letter and CV demonstrate your experience in the responsibility areas or industries listed.

Take action!

Use of action verbs gives your resume power and credibility, making you appear more capable. Saying you “handled monthly social media reports” definitely doesn't sound as impressive as “utilised social analytics tools to demonstrate community growth and engagement”.

Fill the gaps

There are many reasons your CV could have gaps, and they can actually make you seem like a more well-rounded person. Whether you took a year off to travel, to have a baby, to follow a creative pursuit, or to try and start your own business – put that information in your resumé.

Digital role? Digital CV

If you're in a creative field like design or marketing, creating a digital CV or portfolio outlines your experience, while giving evidence of your creativity and skill. Make sure it's clear, though – overdone design can work against you if it's too hard to find the important information.

Honesty is best

Recruiters can see right through fake positions or qualifications on a CV – and even if they don't catch it in the resumé, they may want to discuss those prior positions in your interview. It's rare that a job seeker ticks every single box in a job description and showing enthusiasm to learn those skills you haven't yet acquired goes a long way.

What next?

Once you've wowed a recruiter with your CV, it's time to get down to business. How you interact with your recruiter will have a big influence on the job you secure and your final salary. Maintaining a professional approach to communications with your recruiter is key, as are openness and transparency. Be honest about your needs in a role, your salary requirements, and how you feel interviews went. The more open and honest you are with us, the better we can represent you and find you that dream job!
